You just received a text from an unfamiliar number saying the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) owes you money and you should click on a link to get it.
2/8
Delete the text
It's true that the CRA was informing millions of Canadians about money they were owed, but never via text messages. Agents may phone you, or send an email telling you to log in to your account. So how do you know the communication is legit? The safest bet is to go directly to the CRA My Account and log on yourself. Never reply to a text or click a link or offer in a message claiming to be from the CRA.

Check the email for signs of fraud (like odd wording or typos in the email address)
Call your boss to see if they sent the email
Reply immediately with all the requested information
This is a tricky one. We know you wouldn't be duped by a “too good to be true" offer. But what about a high-priced item that's slashed by 40%? Lots of advertising could actually be peddling counterfeit products.

You're being asked to send money now to earn more money later
